5 Best Dance Movies

It seems that dance movies are everywhere nowadays but that doesn't mean they are all that great! I have seen several dance movie flops in my time and thought it would be nice to recommend the ones that I think are done well! There is no such thing as the perfect dance movie, but some do a better job than others.
  1. Dirty Dancing

This dance movie is the best dance movie of all time! This story of Frances “Baby” Houseman truly leaves its viewers wishing they were also having the time of their life at a summer resort. Johnny Castle is the dance instructor at this resort and the love interest of the film. All one must do is watch the final dance sequence of Dirty Dancing to understand why this film is number one on my list!
  1. Center Stage

Center Stage is number two on my list because it is the dance film that follows my experience in the dance world most accurately. This movie details a group of dance students in their last year training, preparing for their end of year show, and auditioning for ballet companies. This dance movie is based on the School of American Ballet, where I studied ballet for ten years. If you haven’t seen this movie, go watch it!
  1. Step Up

Step Up is a gritty, hardly believable story of a boy from a rough neighborhood who helps a ballet dancer student learn hip-hop. The hip-hop dance is fused with her ballet technique to create an audition routine. While the plot of this film is weak, the dance in this film is highly entertaining!  The quality of dance is what brings this film to number three on my list.
  1. Flash Dance

This 80s-dance film is a story of Alex Owens, a welder who nightlights as a burlesque dancer. Owen’s big dream is to be a professional ballerina! Aside from the great story of Flashdance, the soundtrack is awesome! Check this movie out and at the very least, download the soundtrack.
  1. Footloose

Kevin Bacon is amazing in Footloose! Whatever you do, make sure you watch the 1984 original and not the remake. The magic is not there in the 2011 remake!

I find that when dance seems stressful and work gets busy, it helps to watch a fun dance movie. Watching a good dance movie can remind you of how fun it is to dance and move around. This reminder can be all you need to inspire yourself to return to the rosin box.
