Dance Pick of the Week

This week, the Joyce Theater in New York City is presenting their Joyce Theater Ballet Festival. The festival begins on July 18th and runs through July 29th. The festival’s goal is to give new generations of dancers and choreographers a chance to present their works in New York City.

The festival will feature dancers from companies such as American Ballet Theater, New York City Ballet, and Dance Theater of Harlem. One of my favorite things about this festival is that they are specifically focusing on presenting works by female choreographers. Historically, female choreographers have been underrepresented in the ballet world. This festival’s aim, to showcase female choreographers, is very important!

Of the choreographers being presented at the festival, I recommend trying to catch Claudia Schreier & Company as well as EmeryLeCrone Dance. I have been following both choreographers for quite some time and I love their work!

You can find tickets here!

Grab a friend from around the rosin box and go check out the Joyce Theater Ballet Festival!

Summer Dance

Often dancers around the rosin box talk about other dance performances that they have attended.  If you are looking to get into some dance this summer, there are many chances to catch a performance this summer.

If you look at resources, such as the New York Times, you will find that there are many festivals for dance in the summer.  Whether you are in San Fransisco catching the Ethnic Dance Festival or in New York City catching the Lincoln Center Dance Festival, there is so much to see.  One of my favorite dance festivals in the summer is the Vail International Dance Festival in Colorado!

The Vail International Dance Festival is a favorite festival of mine because of the wide range of works they present.  They present works that cross dance mediums, from ballet, to tap, to hiphop.  In the realm of ballet, dancers from different companies that don't get to dance together regularly will be paired together.  It is the only place you can see dancers from American Ballet Theater and New York City Ballet dance together!

So get out there this summer and go see some dance!
